I can safely say that it DOES get absolutely and completely 100% better. I'm quitting for the 2nd time - 3-1/2 years ago I quit using Zyban and was smoke-free for 2-1/2 years.
Although I am suffering, I know I can quit, because I've done it before. It's amazing how much I deteriorated after I relapsed. I stopped running (I was up to 30k per week sometimes), my skin looks tired and grey - I look 10 years older than I did last summer.
It does get better. It will get better.

Yikes - I've felt very jumpy since I got up this morning. I haven't run out to the convenience store in my pyjamas (yet), but I'm really feeling like I have to strongly resist.
I'm using the patch and zyban - you'd think between those two I'd hardly notice the difference, or be oblivious, but it seems to be the habit and routine that I'm missing this morning.
Coffee, coffee, coffee, and instead of smoking, I've started tidying up, doing laundry, sorting papers, planning dinner (already).
When I take my daughter to dance at noon, I'm going straight to the garden centre for some retail therapy. I figure today I can spend the $ 27 that I didn't spend on cigarettes, and not be in the hole.
I can do this, I can do this, I can do this . . . . . . .

Pyromate - thank you for sharing your story. It is truly inspirational, and the compelling and eloquent writing that you presented it with was very skilled.
Way to go!

Thanks Rusty and Josie!
Heebie-jeebies - I LOVE that word. That must give away the fact that I'm in my forties!
The upside - my house needed a good cleaning. There are door-frames with fingerprints calling my name . . . . . .
Thanks again.

3-1/2 years ago I quit a 25 year pack-a-day smoking habit. I quit using Zyban - it only took 2-1/2 weeks from the time I started taking it.
About a year ago, I relapsed, during some very stressful and transitional times. I've been trying to quit over the last month or so. I went smoke-free with the patch for about a week, then for some reason decided that all I was doing was replacing the nicotine, and started back on Zyban. It doesn't seem to be having the same amazing effect as it did the first time. So I'm back to the patch again. I'm on my 2nd day of patch-assisted non-smoking, and so far, I am doing okay.
I just found this group and forum today - I've read through all of the steps, and feel very motivated.
Since I've quit before, I know I can do it. I just wish it made it easier this time.
I'm looking forward to participating in this group.

Breaking Free - I'm doing! Thanks for asking. I'm on day 3 of the patch - not too many ill effects, but I am obsessed with the couple of minutes that the patch isn't on (I take if off when I shower, and until I dry off). I'm not sure if I'm imagining the knot in my stomach that develops about 5 minutes after I take it off.
So far I've made it through month-end at work on Wednesday, and some other issues that are causing me great stress this morning.
Last night I ordered the book (Allen Carr) that I've seen mentioned a lot on these boards. Mental reinforcement, and possibly shock therapy, can't hurt.
I really, really, really want to be a non-smoker again, and take up my running routine, and look better, and feel better. I'm repeating this sentence as required . . .
Thanks again for asking.

Hey Phillip - I slipped up HUGE after 2-1/2 years smoke-free. I had smoked for 25 years, and I was always the one voted most likely to NEVER quit. Well, I proved them wrong, for a while.
I am so sorry I ever started again. It has taken me almost a year to smarten up and quit again. And completely contrary to what I thought, since I knew I could quit - having done it before - it was harder this time than the first.
Don't give up - the guilt is unbelievable. All the progress I made with my health, my fitness (I started running) - all of it - it wasn't worth giving it up for.
Stick with it. You WILL prevail.

(I'm from T.O. too) My grandmother lived in Riverdale for over 50 years! I loved the zoo when it had real animals in it - not the farm-variety stuff of late.

Hey Dave - I've begun again too. This is my 2nd Quit, after 2-1/2 years smoke-free and a relapse that lasted just under a year. You have to believe me when I tell you that DECIDING to quit again was tougher this time around. I knew I could quit as I'd done it before - but getting to that point was the challenge.
Use whatever tools you can - zyban, patch, candy, anything to get over that first hump.
Once you've made the decision, taken a deep breath (which gets easier every day, BTW), you CAN stay on course.
Take care.

P.S. What was Dave from a year ago telling you?

Breaking Free - congratulations on 30 days. I have only been here a short time, and I realized very quickly that you are a tremendous support here.
