Are my feelings fooling with me?

Hi Tony, I don't know that I can give you any insight, but I can tell you that you are an inspiration to me with your 43 days! That's great. There are so many people here with great advice who have helped me, so just look around, I'm sure you will find just what you need. In the meantime, I can help with your Quit Meter. On the screen you use to type your post, there is a place at the bottom (right above the "preview" button) where you can check the box to show your meter. Congratulations on 43 days, great job!!! The More Your Learn

Thank you Mercy, I find this topic very interesting. When I started smoking 32 years ago, it was something you did to be cool, fit in with everyone. Yes, I do remember coughing and having to work myself into "liking" it, but it was very much socially acceptable, so many people were doing it. Now in this day and age, smoking is becoming more and more socially unacceptable. You cannot smoke in public places, there is hardly any advertising (at least not like it was 30 years ago), and we know much more about the risks involved and the addiction. So, why do our young people start smoking these days? There is little advertising, they are taught it is a drug starting in elementary school and it is banned in public places which makes it pretty much socially unacceptable. It concerns me because I have a teenage son and I have read that I would be fooling myself if I thought he wouldn't smoke just because he hated that I smoked. He is at risk, what more can I do? What can I do to make sure he is never brainwashed into smoking? New Non-Smoker

Hi, I have been smoke free for 3 days, trying to get through my 4th. I smoked 1 1/2 packs a day for more than 32 years and have never tried to quit. I am using Chantix which has definitely helped. I continued smoking through the first 8 days and found they tasted terrible and they weren't making me feel the way they used to. Before I quit I was down to less than 10 cigs a day. I crave cigarettes throughout my entire day. The cravings are not bad enough to make me go buy them, but I do want a cigarette. I continuously remind myself that I am a non-smoker, that I feel better and I am going to make it. Then a little voice says "maybe only a little puff won't hurt" and I try a couple of deep breaths and it goes away. It seems as if my entire day (before quitting) was all about smoking. Everything I did required a smoke and I am reminded of that everytime I carry on with my everyday tasks. I have a terrific support group of family and friends, but I am looking forward to the added benefit of being here. Everything I have read says the odds of me making it are much greater with support from others who are experiencing the same thing. New Non-Smoker

Thank you Danielle for your encouragement. I have done the online quit program and found it to be very helpful. I was amazed at the amount of money I would save in 6 months and do intend to reward myself. I was rewarded last night when my son said he was proud of me. My husband is also very supportive. My husband quit 8 years ago cold turkey after smoking more than 3 packs a day for 35 years. I sometimes feel guilty complaining to him about wanting a cigarette since he went through much worse, but he always asks how I am doing. It is by far one of the hardest things I have ever tried to do. Thanks again for your support. New Non-Smoker

Hi Alohakeia and congratulations on your 4th day of being smoke free. Glad to know someone is walking right beside me as I try to make it to day 5! That little voice is really annoying, but not as annoying as realizing how much of my life was taken over by smoking. I have more time on my hands and if I can just occupy my time doing fun things, or things I should have been doing, I will be fine. I just got off the phone with a friend and I felt bad that all I did was talk about me not smoking and what I have been going through. I find that I do this alot and wonder if I am not being fair to my friends. My friends are very supportive, but I feel as if I am almost obsessive about it. Does anyone else feel like they talk alot about their non-smoking status or is it just me? Is this healthy? I didn't think I would make it through one day without cigarettes so I am somewhat proud of what I have done so far! Alohakeia, if you haven't done so already, be sure to go through the online quit program, it was great. I was amazed at how much money I will be saving in 6 months. That alone is real motivation. Good Luck to us all! New Non-Smoker

Thanks for the welcome and wishes everyone, I appreciate it. I am on Day 5, but I continue to think about cigarettes. The cravings are there, but so far I have not let them beat me. There are times I find myself saying "I really enjoyed smoking", almost like I am questioning why I quit. I know why I quit and why I want to remain smoke free, but it is an ongoing battle. What saves me is that I don't have any in the house and would have to make an effort to get them. Also, I had not smoked in my house since my husband quit 8 years ago, so it was always a conscious effort to smoke. I had to get up and go outside. This has saved me, I make myself continue what I am doing and fight the urge to go outside. I imagine it must be much harder for people who have smoked in their house, or for those in Europe who can smoke everywhere they go. My friend from Germany hated that she couldn't smoke in restaurants over here. Sorry, I'm rambling, and the urge has passed, so Thanks for listening! I also wanted to say that I think it so great seeing everyone's Quit Meter and how many days of life have been gained by quitting. I am still on just hours, but I can't wait to see my days start adding up! New Non-Smoker

Hi Tigger37, congratulations on making it to day 2 of being a non-smoker! I still struggle each day, but I think it gets a little easier. I really didn't think I would make it through just 1 day, so I'm feeling pretty good! Did you quit cold turkey or are you using NRT or medication? I am using Chantix and I believe it really helps. I applaud you for quitting knowing that you would be around a smoker, that has to be hard. My husband quit 8 years ago cold turkey while I was still smoking, so I know it can be done. He smoked up to 4 packs a day sometimes. This support group has been great, just reading gives me a boost. Good luck and yes, you can do it! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 4 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 148 Amount Saved: $24 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 12 Mins: 35 Seconds: 8

PARTY TIME !!!!

Count me in, I love a good party. Rusty, speaking of key limes, I'll bring a couple of key lime pies and a couple of ice cold cosmos would probably go down real nice in the heat! Party on all you non-smokers! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 56 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,792 Amount Saved: $224.00 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 9 Mins: 19 Seconds: 52
