Introduction

Hello. I am new to the site, I stopped smoking this morning. I have made several attempts over the last few years to quit. A couple were serious efforts and I made it 3 to 4 months each time but the others were short lived. I have smoked for over 40 years. So it might be said I am running out of time to quit :) I am very addicted to nicotine and according to the SSC dependancy test I am in the top 1% ! That surprised me. I smoke a pack to a pack and half a day which seems to be pretty average but I guess it is not just how much but when and why you smoke. At my Dr's recommendation I am taking a new medication, Chantix, to assist with my quit. Considering my heavy addiction this shoud be a good test to see if it helps. I will keep everyone informed as to how it is working. All that said I do know that it all boils down to getting through the next 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, at a time. I appreciate all of your support and assistance in advance and look forward to helping anyone else that I can help beat this awful addiction. I...quit!

Welcome Last Puff. Similarly to you, my wife smokes. She doesn't smoke in front of me and is supportive of my effort to quit. However, this does make accesibilty a little easier for us and we have to be extra cautious and on guard. Bottom line though is that it is our choice whether to smoke or not. Staying strong will set an example and maybe help our spouses to quit in the future. I am taking Chantix as well but with just being on my 2nd day I think the others that have more quit time under their belts can give you a better impression of how it is helping. I will tell you in my first day and half I have only had one strong crave. That is not typical of my previous attempts to quit so I am cautiously optimistic that it is going to help. Hi Stacey. It is day 2 for me as well. So welcome. You can do this and your trip to the ER should be a good motivator. Just get through the next minute then the next and so on. Try not to look ahead too far. It is long trip with lots of rewards along the way. Just take it one step at a time. Thanks for your support. I started taking the Chantix last week and took the first full strength dose last night. I am glad to hear that Chantix has been helpful to you all and so far the first 24 hours have been okay. I know however, that there aren't any magic bullets just a long journey as Casey said. Smoked about 30 a day on average, more in times of stress or when partying. Just in rough figures I think it comes out to about 1,500,000 in my lifetime !!! That is pretty scary isn't it ? Hello Alabed and welcome. Just because you don't smoke a lot, NOW, does not mean you don't have an addiction. What a great time to quit though before your addition grows. To those who quit in March 07

As a fellow March quitter I am happy to say that I got through the dredded "Day 3" yesterday without too many problems. I thought that might mean that today might sneak up on me and be tough but not too bad so far. I am using Chantix and so far it is helpful. Like some others have noted it does make me sleepy but I have found if I get active this goes away and at bedtime I don't mind it all. Having used Zyban in previous attempts, it had the reverse effect causing insomnia and than can be a little trying when you are already edgy. I still have craves of course but for the most part they have not been more than moderate though sometimes persistant. Anyway, have been able to handle so far. Of course the trigger responses are still all there and it is almost comical at times. I catch myself reaching for a cig or even planning how I am going to do something so it can include a smoke. So far I am able to laugh at this conditioned behavior. I have chewed through a number of straws ! Glad to be a March Mellow and working on day 4; 1 minute, 1 hour at a time. Good luck with your triathalon training. I am a newbie here but am a big fan of tri-atheletes. My company used to sponsor the Iron Man series and I went to a number of events including their championships in Kona (as a spectator). These events were some of the most inspirational things I have ever seen with people from 18 - 80 participating. It really made me feel pretty lazy and worthless ! Anyway best of luck to you. Welcome Supernova. You don't ever have to do day 1 again once you get through it! You have beaten the chew and you can beat this to. Just take it one minute, one hour, one day at a time. Day one was only 2 days ago for me and it is already becoming a distant memory so hang tough you can do it. Rabbit, you said you felt better physically and mentally so you know you are doing the right thing and making progress. Think of those craves as part of the healing process. Remember when you were a kid and you would fall and skin your knee or elbow? After a few days of healing it would start to itch. So look at your craves like they were an itch, that means you are healing. That itch went away and so will the craves in time. Smokers and non-smokers have good and bad days but I defy anyone to tell me they had a good day because they smoked ! Hang in there and like Phil said look forward.
