Anti-Smoking Ordinances...What's your opinion?

I believe that an employer has the absolute right to dictate who works for him. If an employer wants drug free/tobacco free workers, he should be able to test for it. I know that it's a fine line we walk when it comes to testing people for things that happen off company property, and misuse can occur, but something like that should be monitored very closely. I can certainly see it's positive side. When I have 1 year quit, I will get with my insurance company and ask for a reduction in rates. I have been told by them that if I quit smoking, and stay quit, I will get perferred rates. The catch is that I have to submit to a blood test when I apply for those rates, and then be tested every year thereafter to insure I'm in compliance. I can't wait to roll up my sleeve! Is that fair? You bet it is! How different is that from requiring an employee to do the same? Not very. Smokers need a wakeup call. If it takes pressure from their employers, then so be it. (am I a nasty reformed smoker or what?? :p ) Be Strong. Be Smart. slipped again

orel, Wherever you find the motivation and true commitment to quit is up to you. When you do find it, however you find it, it will guide you to your quit. Many people struggle to find that total resolve to quit, but when they do, the quit just happens. It doesn't matter if they go cold turkey, use an NRT or whatever, the quit will take over their life and the process will begin. Open yourself up to your quit. Don't fear it. Don't be apprehensive. Embrace your quit as a mother embraces her newly born child. Quitting in a way is much like the miracle of birth, a quitter is experiencing a new life... one free from the bonds of addiction. Live your quit and love yourself for your new life. Best wishes. Be Strong. Be Smart. That "Empty" Feeling (must read repost from another site)

The whole lesson that needs to be learned on a quit is a simple one: To accept the emptiness. At the very core of life, and the sum of it all, is just that. Emptiness is what IS. Emptiness is at the center of all human experience. We smoke and drink and spend money we dont have and pine for things and people and days gone by and worship our idols to escape from it, but its always there. Emptiness. Nothing left to do or say. What now? we ask. How do I replace whats lost? we wonder. We quit this deadly habit because its killing us but we secretly want to return, not so much because of the craving and the nicotine rush but because we hate the empty feeling we have without it. We leave abusive people and return to them, or someone like them, for the same reason. We dont like prison (depression, guilt, our addiction to nicotine, alcohol, sex or our low self esteem) but its the only reality we know. To deal with emptiness is to confront our demons and see them for what they really are. Nothing at all! Emptiness is just the flow of life and reality as it really is. Times change. Relationships end. Jobs are lost. Loved ones die. Old lifestyles change. Our children grow up. Addictions are broken. We move on. We have to. To not accept the emptiness is to stagnate. To look back is to turn to salt like Lots wife. The lesson to learn is to Let it Be as the Beatles said. To let go does indeed cause grief and suffering. We cry for awhile and time passes and things improve. We look back after a few years at whats lost, and though we still feel a pang of grief, we see that we did manage to move on despite ourselves. Life is dynamic! Like a river it constantly moves on. We can sit at the rivers edge and watch it flow while we cry, or get a canoe and jump in it for the ride. Imagine what all youll see on the journey! Whats next? we ask now with eager anticipation..." Celebrate your quit....celebrate the freedom from nicotine addiction! Be Strong. My story

Dear Abby, Loved your columns when I was growing up! That wasn't you?? Darn.. oh well. ;p You have received an absolute ton of great advice here from the best support people in the business! But fear can be crippling, can't it? People have lots of fears. Most of us have a fear of dying. You do have a few of dying, don't you? Or do you have more of a fear of becoming a living shell of a person like your mother is? Doesn't matter. I read a quote a while back that really stuck with me.. "What consumes your thoughts controls your life". You have a fear of not being able to stay quit. Failure. You are consumed with that and it has a death grip on you, replacing your confidence with doubt. Somehow you must find a way to replace your negative thinking with positive thinking. The root of a quit is confidence. Strength, Determination, Commitment, A Positive Attitude.. they are all critically important to quitting, but you must have that confidence and the ability to say "I am in control of my life, not some damn weed!" Like riding a bike, you learned through failure. If you feared falling over you would never have learned. You quit, you don't make it. Get up and do it again! Find out where you messed up, correct it and move on!! Don't wimp out! We are right here, ready and able to provide the motivation to help you succeed! Go for it Abby! Get mad at those stinking coffin nails! Get the attitude!! Get quit!! Be Strong. Be Smart. The Monkey............................

Brent, Very thoughtful and insightful post Mr. Englishman! Your analogy of the monkey was right on the mark, as well as treating the symptoms and not the problem. Excellent material! That "Empty" Feeling (must read repost from another site)

flatlander, Yep, we all have moments like this. Here is a quote that I like to think of during those "empty" times... "If I have just one I will be back where I started. Where I started was desperately wishing I could be where I am today." Be Strong. Be Smart.
