Anxiety, Depression and Bipolar Disorder: Confusion?

Just to write an update about my mood swings. I still feel mood swings and when I read the symptom tracker that I update daily on this program I do now found a tendency, because anxiety and depression levels have many fluctuations.

In this way I have just created a mood tracker in a spreadsheet adapted from one that I found in www.psycheducation.org. This site has a lot of information about the bipolar disorder. I will starting updating this spreadsheet instead of the symptom tracker on this forum so I can show it to my doctor on the next visit.

Working on Treatment Goals - A Big Challenge

It seems session 4 and 5 are around the same topics: writing treatment goals and exposure planning. I am still on this sessions, did some exposure work and have been doing small modifications of the initial exposure plans. I think this is normal, as it is said, and I am taking my time to work more on sessions 4 and 5.

I think that developing the skills for working on this sessions would be very useful also on other aspects of life. I always had a problems with writing goals for myself. One of my main difficulties was thinking what I could be doing in the long term, for example in 1 year ahead. I got very frustrated because I couldn't even write objectives for the short term, so 1 year was unthinkable.

Now I am practicing goal setting for a period of 8 weeks with the treatment goals. I haven't been doing exposure work everyday but I did at least 5 exposure activities on the last 2 weeks. What I keep reminding myself is to not get overwhelmed because if it happen I quit doing exposure activities. On the other hand if I keep lazy I do not do any exposure work.

I think the answer is the middle term. This is what I will try to accomplish on the following weeks:
- Do everyday some exposure work even if it is an activity with low anxiety levels
- Review every week treatment goals and exposure plans and modify it according to previous experience

I hope I will start getting better with goal setting. The main challenge for me is to work on the treatment goals without getting obsessed or lazy about them. I have to find the balance needed.

Working on Treatment Goals - A Big Challenge

Hello hugs4u. I think you can understand better the SMART concept if you look at some examples how to set a goal. You can Google SMART goals and find a lot of examples

Recognizing the Types of Anxious Thoughts

I have been challenging my anxious thoughts with the challenge worksheet provided on this program. One of the things that one must do is to recognize the types of anxious thoughts:
1. Jumping to conclusions
2. Catastrophizing
3. Fear goggles
4. All-or-none thinking

I am finding an enormous difficulty in recognizing the type of anxious thoughts that I have. For example, today I worked through a challenge worksheet and I thought that all the 4 types of thoughts were present. Could this be true? Or is my thought process so distorced that I do not recognize the type of thoughts?

Recognizing the Types of Anxious Thoughts

Thank you all for your feedback. I am glad to be around here with so caring and supporting people. We are moving together to have more and better days.

Sometimes I get lost on the technicalities and I think it is my perfectionism talking, which has a contribution for my anxious feelings.

P.S. It is 4am here right now and I could not sleep, even with some relaxation techniques. This was my worse night since 3 months ago when I started a new medication plan.

Getting to Know the Members

Good point Ashley. Sometimes I forgot who I am and associate anxiety with my personality (wrongly, a cognitive distortion, I know :)) .

Since 7 years ago I stooped more or less doing things I enjoyed, I things started getting worse because of this. But before that I enjoyed meeting new people to share the blessings of life with them. I spent more time with friends and travel with them. I had pleasure in my work and had good plans for the future. I had an active social life and attended many events, went to concerts, etc.

Because of this I felt more alive and didn't pay attention to my mood swings having a more balanced life.

Struggling lately

Hello ashepp3. I understand how you are feeling right now and I must confess that  have been through the same symptoms. It is like a roller coaster with the downs discouraging us. We must remember that this battle is to be won with more then one step and with some setbacks along the way. You should also consult your doctor and talk about how you are feeling.

In a fog of anxiety and panic

Hello David. I am sorry how you are feeling right now. Mental health problems are not easy to deal with and especially when we are feeling down. You made a good work posting your feelings on this forums. In my case it helps a lot knowing that I am not alone and have a place to talk about my feelings.

You are doing a good job to find therapy and a doctor to help with these issues.
