This time it must stick!

Hi All.
My name is Moses and I had my last smoke on Monday.
I've been reading the posts and have felt encouraged, so thank you to all who have left a piece of yourself here.
My first day was remarkably easy. I have no idea why but am grateful for it.
Today was another story...I'm a fish out of water. My biggest fear is the weekend for the first few weeks. I can't afford to have 5 minutes to myself or I will be tempted all day. The smell is another powerful trigger for me.
I quit 24 years ago for 2 weeks. Since then I have never lasted 24 hours. This is the first time since. This time it must stick! Yeah. It must. And I am responsible for that.
All the best to you Quitters out there. Thanks for your example.

This time it must stick!

Hi all.
Thanks for the encouragement and the suggestions! I really need it right now. Surely i'm not the only one, either.
I seem to be fine at work because i'm so busy [recession? what recession??] but once the drive home hits it's all uphill.
This hasn't been a New Year's resolution for me. This quit has been coming on for several months. But over the years I kept telling myself I wouldn't succeed. What a stupid thing to self-talk.
I guess the biggest thing is when I'm smoking I'm quite sociable. When trying to quit I get miserable as hell. Even I can't stand myself. It's the biggest reason I end up going back to the smokes.
I have been reading the posts a lot in the evening. A half hour ago I was ready to go outside and say to heck with it. At least for a couple puffs. I decided to come here instead. I'm glad I did.
I'm not sleeping either. Not just the last few nights but for the last few months. My naturopathic doctor told me to try something tonight so I'll see how that goes.
Keep up the great work everyone. It's such an inspiration to see your progress. So, you see, us newbies are counting on you.
Even to the lady with 8 days in...that's awesome. Eight days! That sounds like such a milestone to me.
Here's a quote for you... I don't know who said it:
"Most people will not change until the pain of remaining the same outweighs the pain of change".
Looks like there's pain regardless...

Alright! We can do this the hard way or the easy way

thanks all for the wisdom and insight!
the demon is on the shoulder all right. I must agree that is the worst part. Getting off nicotine I think would be a snap if it wasn't for the demon perched at my ear.
Anyone got a sling shot?
Cheers!

New and looking to quit

Happy...

I continued to put off quitting because I had self-talked myself into thinking it would never happen.
That's all or nothing thinking. Stinkin' thinkin'.
You can do it. One thing I'm going to do differently this time is to know that if I do relapse, it doesn't mean I have to throw in the towel on the whole thing. I can choose to brush myself off, brush my teeth, and get back on the band wagon. Having a [relapse] smoke isn't necessarily the same as failure unless I continue to lie down, give up, and justify my failure with self-pity and say to myself "that's it, i'm done quitting".
I'm new to this quit, so maybe i'm not making any sense, and I hope i haven't offended you.
All i know is tonight i would've grabbed a smoke from my wife but i came here instead. Doesn't mean I won't relapse/fail, but i'm' going to bed now and if I fail it will have to be tomorrow and that's day 4 and i'll worry about that tomorrow.
We all have different times to be ready, but think about this: what is intrinsic to smoking that is so appealing? Really it is a wolf in sheep's clothing. It is addiction, meaning we are not in control of our minds or bodies, and it isn't normal for our bodies and minds to be polluted like this. The thought that smoking gives me something is nothing but the addiction talking.
Hang in there. Keep visiting us. Keep your butts in a jar and smell them periodically. That's what we smell like to non-smokers. Wishing you well.
Moses

First day....

Happy,
Maybe try a smaller dosage of patch.
They kept me up at night so what I'm doing is putting a patch on when i get up. If I'm losing it I'll have a gum for a minute or two until the patch starts to kick in then i get rid of it.
I take the patch off on the way home from work so it can wear off by bedtime. A couple hours after taking it off I might have another gum and get online here.
I found the generic brand of patch was less nauseating.
Hope this helps.
Hang in there.
Moses

Jan 22nd - Thursday's Quitters!

Mr. Ed,
Now if you were thoroughbred, wouldn't it be Mr. Edward?
I was told to let you know my stats need to go on some board too. I don't remember what I was told but they said you were the man.
Thanks.

day 3

grrr...
hang in there. 3 days is great. You're halfway through the worst week. That's something to be proud of.
i quit for 2 weeks 24 years ago and until now never made it another smoke-free 24 hours.
This website and it's people are what made the difference for me.
Work through the exercises if you haven't yet and come up with your coping mechanisms.
I can relate to being grumpy. And sleepless. And headaches. And not knowing whether i'm coming or going and forgetting what the heck i was doing.
You will succeed if you want it.
The thing i'm doing differently this time is that [and i'm not using this as a justification TO fail] but in the past if i slipped i said screw it and quit quitting until a much later date.
This time i'm going to keep trying to quit even if i slip.
Take care. Read and post often. Stay distracted (the hardest part for me!)
Moses
