What we told our kids...

Lainey, Thanks for the post. It couldn't be more true. Cigarettes were somehow always justified because they were the legal drug. It's great that everyone here is butting out for good and won't have to eat their words anymore. Brenna, Bilingual Support Specialist

I had never told my kids much when they were younger. Being a closet smoker I just said I was going out to buy a quart of milk!! ;p Later one I gave them lectures....(though not admiting I smoked)...but did they listen? Gen/Unhooked, My own mother (who still smokes) says she cannot quit because she has "an addictive personality." Classic junkie denial. She also forbid me to smoke...so guess what I did! Unhooked You are woman after my own heart. I used to say "What, would you rather I was miserable?" Lainey is right things/words do come back to haunt us. OMG, Lainey, yes, countless times. Only when mine asked about cigarettes, I said, "You better be thankful I smoke. Sometimes it's the only thing between you and a slow, painful death." Yeah, I never was a coddler! The junkie lies that came out of our mouths, though, isn't it amazing what we made ourselves believe? Isn't it funny, how all the things we told our kids about drugs, have come back to haunt us in our own addiction. - One will lead to more. - You will become addicted! - They will kill you! - It will screw up your whole life! - Don't give in! - Just say No! - Don't you want to be real! You could be talking about cigarettes in every instance! We probably all have told our kids these words and we probably had a cigarette in our hands at the time. And how many of us when asked by our kids "Well what about cigarettes?" answered them by saying, "Oh cigarettes are different, they're legal." How your words come back to haunt you! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 246 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,150 Amount Saved: $2,595.30 Life Gained: Days: 30 Hrs: 3 Mins: 10 Seconds: 55
