Everything Marie, Rusty and Martha said and a little bit more! I would never dream of preaching uninvited because I know only too well how unwelcome that was for me as a smoker. However, there have been many occasions during my quit when people have actively sought advice from me on how I quit and stayed quit and I have been only too pleased to help them with what I know and in an extremely non-judgemental way. I quit when the final piece of my jigsaw fell into place, not when someone showed me their completed jigsaw. Each to their own but that one's not for me. Maybe a seed was planted, who knows. But while you are not smoking you are sending a more postive message. Example will win them over. Words, are words. You have a great quit going!!! While I admire your passion John, I have to admit that back in the day that would have made me want to smoke even more and would have left me mumbling, "Who does he think he is?" I got all kinds of advice from all kinds of people about how and why I should quit but until I was ready it was like hearing the teacher from Charlie Brown, "mwaht mwaht mwaht mwaht mwhat". Everyone is different though. Maybe that will be the final straw for your co-workers. Either way, a 100+ Days looks good on ya and you've proven to them that it CAN be done. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hey John, Very interesting post. I was amazed at the hand to mouth actions of a smoker in a coma. As you know it was very acceptable to smoke when I started and not unusual to smoke in the hospital. I remember when my father in law had lung cancer and his wife (who was a nurse) would turn off the oxygen and let him smoke. They did that just before he died. Nicotine is a powerful addiction. We need to keep our N.O.P.E. attitude. I can't keep from spreading it around also. I agree, Marie. Certainly all of us were chastised by non-smokers or lectured by well meaning friends or family. I used to say, "No one knows better than a smoker that we need to quit. We're the ones who know we smell, who cough in the middle of the night, who burn our clothes and our carpets and our car seats. Sheesh." So it never works and it only alienates us. Better to be an example than a proselytizer, I think. John, Although everybody must quit for themselves, it sounds like you gave your friend a good dose of reality! Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

I just had to budd in ..... My best friends are smokers, when I quit they were quitting also ....... I'm quit, they're not and the other day my friend told me(quote)( when you quit, at the beginning, you were a pain, not easy to be around)This is when I realised, they don't get it and it's no use to try and make them understand, I know I wouldn't and didn't listen to all of it when I smoked, I was very much into smoking, didn't care what others said about it and it made me smoke even more. So i.m.o. live and let live and be thankful you can do it, be proud of yourself and pamper yourself, this a sneaky addiction, stay away as much as you can from the smoke and smokers. Of course you can't stay away from your friends, but stay away from their second-hand smoke if at all possible. You're all doing great, keep on quitting one day at a time Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 438 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,446 Amount Saved: $2,847.00 Life Gained: Days: 58 Hrs: 4 Mins: 35 Seconds: 51

Good for you John! Keep 'e on the ropes! I always take every opportunity to tell my smoking friends I love them but they stink. They have all kinds of nasty things to say back, but they can't say they don't! Yep, I have become one of those people who attack smokers! :p Was outside in the smoking area chatting with a co-worker (one of the 3 or 4 remaining who still smokes) when one of the guys who helped inspire me to quit walked over and lit a cigarette! I was like, WHAT ARE YOU DOING! He has been on Chantix for 4 1/2 months and still smokes. Says he smoke only 2 cigarettes a day down from 2 packs a day and was proud of that. Then went into, I am not ready to quit right now crap. It is kinda sad seeing how the addiction affects a persons decision. Oh yeah, most of you guys here know me by now. I shot back at him with both barrels. Ding Ding Ding, ROUND ONE! I started in with my, did you know....? statements :) I was majorly bummed, thought he quit. IMHO smoking even 1 puff a day is not being smoke free. I backed off for a minute then started right back up again for Ding Ding Ding, ROUND TWO! We then got on the discussion of how some people only smoke when they are having a drink or whatever. That's when is said, I am an addict, I cant do that, if I was to smoke I smoke anywhere and everywhere or I don't smoke at all. Told them I hated the cravings I used to have when I was a smoker. Hated the fact I didn't have time to go outside for a smoke. I told them that it is the cravings that bothered me when I was a smoker. Then asked them, don't you guys hate those cravings? LOL, I had a captive audience cause they are restricted to where they can smoke. hehe! I Backed off again but immediately jumped into Ding Ding Ding, ROUND THREE! This is when we then talked about emphysema. That is when one of them said, "I suppose I shouldn't smoke after seeing my mother-in-law die from that!" He said when she was in a comma at the hospital she was making the motions of smoking a cigarette, including the hand to her mouth and puffing away! He said it was very depressing to watch. I think I planted a seed. Oh yeah, I will be back, I think I have weakend them! heh :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 114 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,850 Amount Saved: $399.00 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 14 Mins: 40 Seconds: 33
