Lose the Smoke. Keep the Fire!

Lolly, It is really interesting to witness the attitude of the world toward smoking change. It must be especially for you, having seen legislation enforced in Italy and coming soon to France. You are right, the French may be a little immature about it but that will make it fun for you to watch. I live in North Carolina, US. Really it is tobacco country. But I see it struggling to find a new identity. Tobacco farmers are switching to grapes/wine. Railways that used to transport tobacco are being converted (rails to trails) to trails that people walk, run and bike (American Tobacco Trail), you know...do healthy things. Old tobacco warehouses are being converted to restaurants and markets. Quite remarkable, although a bill to ban smoking in public places and restaurants just failed. There is another bill on the way to the Governor's desk to ban smoking in state buildings. So as you can see we are holding on to our heritage here. Lolly, So good to see you giving advice here again. I SO miss your weekend promises... nobody seems to do it quite like you did! It seems as though now, it gets forgotten about most of the time, which is a real shame. I used to always look forward to whatever positive advice or fresh outlook you'd give to us each week! And now, it's good to see you giving that advice and fresh outlook once again here! I truly love "Lose the Smoke. Keep the Fire." That reminds me of Mercy's "instead of 'I've GOT to quit," think "I GET to quit." It's just about turning it around to have a positive outlook on quitting. When I first quit, I didn't have that fire for very long... it died about a month in, which really made the quit hard for me. After my last slip, however, I somehow got that fire back and still have it today... even more than I did then! And I must say that it makes a world of a diference! Thanks for the new mantra! I love it! Crave the Quit! That was a great sharing Lolly. It gives me hope for the future. We just went smoke free in ALL public places, (even bars). there was an initiative on the ballot that we could vote for that made it possible for each individual bar owner to decide if they would allow smoking in their place of business or not. Well, the voters have spoken. The outcome of the vote was NO smoking in public places, not even bars. I really believed that when it came to the neighborhood bars, it should have been up to the owners. If people do not want to go to a bar because there is smoking, there would be other bars where there was no smoking. The privately owned bars with no room for a patio for smokers can suffer financially. If i was a private business owner, I would want the freedom to decide on such as issue myself, without the government getting involved. I was surprised when the '"no smoking anywhere" initiative passed...I thought the "freedom of choice for bar owners" would pass (no smoking anywhere else). But, wow, as I said, the people have spoken. The majority of people do not want to be anywhere where smoking is going on. I do not go to bars very much, but the first time i went to my neighborhood bar and there was no smoking!, I was like "wow, this is nice" no waving my hand in front of my face or watery eyes. It is an heated topic, but I think private business owners should have the right to decide this issue for themselves. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 36 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 864 Amount Saved: $180.00 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 0 Mins: 28 Seconds: 18

Oh Lolly, you are quite lovely. And you have been my mentor since I joined way back in late 2004. I do love Lose the Smoke. Keep the Fire. It is right on target for those who (like I was) are afraid they will lose their identity if they quit. Audrey, Not so much a first grade teacher....just old enough and ugly enough to feel the need to give advice and try to help new quitters. So many people on this site helped me when I was quitting, so I try to give back a bit(not as much nowadays,).....every little helps, and positive thinking is one of the most important parts of the quitting process. You are doing well at 165 days....Congratulations! I live in France now, and the final legislation for restaurants and bars comes into place at the beginning of 2008 (I think.) It will be interesting to see how that goes. It worked amazingly well in Italy when we lived there, as they did it for the children. The French have never been ones for obeying rules, so I'm looking forward to seeing if it will be enforced. England joining in makes all of the UK the same now. Scotland, Ireland and Wales have already done it. Lolly. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/25/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 948 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 33,180 Amount Saved: 4,740.00 Life Gained: Days: 135 Hrs: 13 Mins: 13 Seconds: 12

Anyway, doesn't really effect me or where I go! I know alot of you folks are excited about being smoke free over there! Hi all, There has been a fair bit of discussion on site about England finally banning smoking in public places at the beginning of July. Leading up to this have been loads of quitting ads on TV. Right now my favourite 2 are.......... TAME THE BEAST! I always personalised nicotine into the Nicodemon, and I felt I was taming my own inner beast. Alternatively...... LOSE THE SMOKE. KEEP THE FIRE. Both are great mantras for new quitters. The second one in particular conjures up images of real strength. Keep that positive fire within you......the initial zeal you had when you made that great decision to quit for good. It's so much better than any negative feelings about how you will cope etc. Just make up your mind to keep that fire within you and the days will mount up. The determination to win at all costs is what made many of us succeed. My own mantra was......NEVER LOOK BACK, THE FUTURE IS AHEAD!!! I NEVER LOOK BACK AND I AM FREE!!! YOU WILL BE TOO!!! Thinking of you, Love Lolly. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/25/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 947 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 33,145 Amount Saved: 4,735.00 Life Gained: Days: 135 Hrs: 10 Mins: 35 Seconds: 13
