I guess I meant to ask about the use of the smartphones instead of social media, which are only one aspect of them.

A great use is the portability, with internet enabled of a site like the "panic center", so you you have your support system in your pocket.   This is great, but the number of people online seems fewer recently.

I wonder if people can comment on their value of the smartphones, since there are some promotions, and I need to make a decision in 10 days.  I know there are blackberries, iphones, androids and a fourth I can't remember, but what applications are people using out in the "real" world, when we manage to get "out there"?

Hugs

I've been on chat rooms and still have friends from one of the better ones. We use skype now to keep it private and because it is free. I do not use face book because Yahoo leaks like a sieve and is easy to hack into. I like skype and have had three way conversations.
By the way there are lots of people on dating chat rooms that are just there for the chat. Some of my friends are married. Not the best way to meet someone but it does happen. Mostly we traded recipes, stories, jokes. It was for the most part fun but every chat room has it's share of idiots. The idiots you just ignore.
One warning. Use a separate Email address if you are going to pass it out to anyone. There are people there that will sell your address. Never give it out on first contact.
It took me about six months to get up the nerve to enter a chat room. For the most part I found it interesting.

I've benefitted from this support group by taking the edge off my isolation, and complementing individual treatment with CBT.  It's been a long haul.

I was in an "in-person" support group monthly, but I was frightened off, and tonight it meets again.  I'd like to go, and it benefitted me as a caregiver in the past, and I miss it.  I just don't wish to get hassled again.

I don't think I posed my question well originally.  My cellphone's hinge isn't working, and my doc suggested a smartphone, likening getting one to the move from dail-up internet to higher-speed internet.

I'd still be interested in how social media has helped others in their lives, since I think that's a major draw to the smartphone?  Or maybe I'm wrong.

This is kind of reminding me of wishing to join Mensa, and not doing well on an online quiz

Hi Hugs,

It sounds like you have already benefited from participating in this support  group. How have you benefited and how would you like to benefit from participating in other support groups?

I wonder if anyone has had success with mitigating their isolation through social media.  Yesterday, I felt really isolated, until I received a postive response from one of the members.  Then I received an email from a friend travelling, who's never had time for friendship.

I suppose that nurturing one another is important in sustaining any friendship, so in the second case, I'm not to blame since I've tried.  With this website, there  are other limitations such as anonymity which limit the growth of the relationship.

Social media websites were suggested to me many years ago,  and I didn't venture into any "chat" room to this day.  However, I see the advantages with portability, etc.

It was just suggested that I replace my basic cellphone with a smartphone, perhaps because of the advantages of social media.

Any experiences from members with social media success stories are welcome.
