Thank you so much for all of your advice.  I went grocery shopping, it was a very small shopping, but I did it.  I went to the self checkout, as I always do, because I feel more in control.

               Tara Elizabeth,

Welcome to the forums. I can relate  to the list of things you wrote that you have trouble
doing as I have had most of the same issues. As of right now I am working on driving and
being able to go into the grocery store to shop. I thought I had conquered most of my fears
over the years only to have relapses, but I dust myself off and try again.  As for the shopping
I have started with going to smaller stores like the dollar store and have been able to work my way
into staying and working through panic ( I to have a hard time with the checkout line) I know its
because I can't leave in the middle of paying so I distract myself by working on my breathing and
looking at some of the things around the register, and repeating positive affirmations in my head.
It also helps if you go at a slow time of day as diva said. as for the driving, I have started out by
driving in a local park as the traffic is not as busy. By doing these things in small steps I am hoping
to build my confidence so that I can move forward. I agree with diva about listing your achievements
as this will show you that you can overcome alot of your fears. hope this helps.

Well, for the grocery thing, I suggest going at a time when the store is less full of people if at all possible. Also, have a list ready so you don't need to dawdle. If you can you can bring a safe person with you. That really helped me at first. Shop in small doses more often so you don't have to stay there so long.  Have somebody waiting to pick you up so you can leave when you are done. Well that is how I got through it. Hope this helps.

As for things I haven't conquered yet.

Afraid of heights, really afraid.
Still nervous in crowds.
I don't take planes.
I don't drive.
I don't sit in the middle of a row at the theatre or the movie. I feel the need to sit at the end of a row. Oh and I don't sit at balcony levels or higher.
Doing my banking can send me into a panic.
I can't stand strangers in my house. Only people I am close to can come in.
... There must be more but I don't remember them hahaha!

This is the list of things I have conquered or accomplished.

I leave my house alone or accompanied.
I exercise.
I can shower with nobody with me in the bathroom, I can even close the door.
I can take nice long baths by myself in the room.
I can leave home to travel (I did this by bus).
I can take the bus, even long distances.
I can use public transportation.
I have worked.
I have collaborated on a paper that has been submitted for publication.
I have graduated from a bachelor's degree.
I go see movies and plays and shows.
I go to the restaurant even on Fridays and Saturdays.
I go to the mall on my own and shop.
I go for walks accompanied or not.
I can leave the house without taking my anxiety meds with me.
I can meet new people and have a nice time chatting with them.
I can go to the dentist and the doctors alone.
... I am sure there are more.

I added the list of things I have conquered or accomplished because I think it is important to acknowledge and celebrate all the big and little steps we take and all our successes even if we are not fully done with our "to do lists". Let's celebrate each success!

TaraElizabeth,

Thank you for sharing this list here. It sounds like a lot of your fears stem from public places or situations that are often crowded. A lot of members here can also identify with these situations.

In terms of going grocery shopping, is it possible to go at a time of day when it would be less crowded? Is there are 24hr grocery store near you that would make the shopping experience less stressful for you? Perhaps before you go shopping you could create a list that would help you grab all the items you need while spending as little time as possible there?

Members, what other advice could you offer TaraElizabeth? How do you make it easier to go grocery shopping?

I have trouble with lots of things,

Things I can't do/have LOTS of trouble doing:

Take public transportation
Wait in line
Being at a register, I feel I am not in control of the situation.
Go in a mall
Drive long distances
Sitting at traffic lights (causes panic)
Driving
Driving with others ( fear of not being in control)
Traffic (this is the worse)
Tunnels
Be in large crowds
Be in large open places
Not being able to see an exit or way out
Not being able to sit near the door in a classroom/meeting
Interviews - to the point where I need to medicate myself more than usual.

Ofcourse the list goes on & on.

Does anyone have any suggestions, because I really need to go grocery shopping and I'm scared too : (
