interpretation

I had someone actually understand me today, but she has a degree in what we were talking about, surprising because I don't. :-)

Ten people can look at something and see ten different things and even more so if half are women. This is due to interpretation, how we see things, and here I'm using the greater sense, all the senses.  Even the written word with all its punctuation to keep it clear is open to interpretation. If I write the word "car" some of you will see your car, some will see different coloured cars and I will see all the cars I know and discard that for the word car in black and white.
But some will see fear because they associate "car" with trauma. Yet what is a car. Broken down to its simplest a car is a conveyance on rubber wheels. Even if we see all different cars we still know what is being talked about because we all have a car in our memory somewhere.
Now take something new, something not in our memory. Where does our interpretation come from. It would seem to be the breaking down of the parts of what we see into what we know and what is close to what we know. And where do these things come from? Past experiences and observations. Few men are expected to build a soufflé or women a house, but there are those that can do both because they have past experience.  And this past experience allows them to build from a plan or a recipe. Total interpretation. But what gets this into memory and the appropriate part of memory? Importance. (repetition) And this is what core beliefs are. Not just things that tell you who you are, they do that but also how to think. How to interpret and since they come from past experiences the chances are really good that we have different core beliefs. And therefore different interpretations.
You are going to do this program based on your interpretation and it may well not be the same as mine if you are new to this where as I'm not and I have a lot of personal and second hand experience. I also question everything and CBT is one thing I have not been able to tear apart. It works but it is only a tool, your interpretation makes it work or fail. Interpretation of a situation is what causes panic attacks. Interpretation is what gets rid of them. CBT teaches you how to do that correctly. If it isn't working your core beliefs are probably interfering. You will have to change them.

Davit.
